Tips for a photo that gets accepted

We handle the background and size. These parts are up to you.

  • Even, soft light

Face a window or shoot in daylight. Avoid shadows on your face and behind your head.

  • Look straight at the camera

Keep your head level and your face centred, with both ears about equally visible.

  • Neutral expression

Mouth closed, eyes open and clearly visible. Most countries don't accept a big smile.

  • Glasses off

Many countries no longer allow glasses. If you must wear them, avoid glare and thick frames.

  • Contrasting clothes

Wear something that stands out from the background. A white top can blend into a white backdrop.

  • A recent photo

Use a photo taken in the last six months that shows you as you look today.

Passport photo FAQ

Is the passport photo maker free?
Yes. Making a photo uses one background removal from your free daily allowance or your credits. Changing the document, background or position afterwards costs nothing.
Will my photo be accepted?
We crop to the official size, keep the head height within the allowed range and use a compliant background. Acceptance also depends on lighting, expression and the issuing office's own rules, so check the official requirements before you apply.
Which background colour do I need?
Most countries ask for plain white or light grey. Some, like France, don't allow white, and the UK prefers light grey or cream. The tool picks the right colour for the document you choose.
How do I print my passport photos?
Download the print sheet and print it at 100% scale on 10×15 cm (4×6 in) photo paper at a print shop or kiosk, or on A4 at home. Then cut along the grey lines.
Can I use the photo for an online application?
Yes. The digital JPG has the document's exact proportions and plenty of resolution. For documents with upload limits, such as the US 600–1200 px and 240 KB, the file is sized to fit.
What happens to my photo?
Your photo is sent to our servers only to remove the background. It isn't used to train models or shared with third parties. Face detection, cropping and editing run in your browser.
