Marketplace Image Requirements: eBay, Etsy, Walmart & Google (2026)
One cheat sheet for marketplace image requirements: main-image rules for eBay, Etsy, Walmart, and Google Shopping — minimum and recommended pixel sizes, pure-white background rules, watermark bans, and Google's incoming 500×500 minimum — plus the one master image that satisfies all four.

Selling on more than one marketplace means living under more than one rulebook. eBay measures the longest side, Etsy measures the shortest, Walmart wants a mathematically pure white, and Google Shopping is quietly raising its minimums while nobody's looking.
Get any of it wrong and the punishment is rarely a polite email. It's a suppressed listing, a disapproved product feed, or a photo that never earns the zoom feature buyers actually use.
This is the cheat sheet: the main-image rules for eBay, Etsy, Walmart Marketplace, and Google Shopping, verified against each platform's current guidelines. Specs do shift, so when in doubt, check the platform's current official guidelines — but as of today, here's the landscape.
eBay Image Requirements: The Numbers That Matter
eBay is the most forgiving on size and the least forgiving on decoration.
- Minimum size — at least 500 px on the longest side, or the upload gets rejected.
- Recommended size — 1600 px or more on the longest side. This is the threshold that activates eBay's zoom feature, and zoom is where buyers talk themselves into purchases.
- File size — up to 12 MB per photo.
- No added anything — eBay's picture policy bans added borders, text, artwork, and watermarks, including ownership watermarks. If it wasn't in the scene when you clicked the shutter, it doesn't belong.
- Background — not formally mandated everywhere, but eBay's own photo guidance pushes a plain white or neutral backdrop, and clean listings consistently look more credible in cluttered search results.
Etsy Photo Requirements: Bigger Than You Think
Etsy's vibe is handmade, but its image specs are anything but casual.
- Recommended size — at least 2000 px on the shortest side. Note the difference from eBay: a 2000 × 1200 photo passes eBay's bar and misses Etsy's.
- File size — Etsy recommends keeping files under 1 MB for fast loading, so export smart rather than huge.
- Photo count — up to 10 photos per listing. Serious shops use most of them.
- Thumbnail crop — search thumbnails crop wider than square, so leave breathing room around your product in photo one.
- Background — no white-background mandate. Styled lifestyle shots win here; we broke down the full approach in our Etsy product photos guide.
Walmart Marketplace Image Requirements: The Strictest White
Walmart runs automated checks, and "almost white" is a failing grade.

- Background — the main image must sit on pure white, RGB 255,255,255. Off-white, light gray, and eggshell all fail, even though your eye can barely tell the difference.
- Size — Walmart's guidelines call for 2200 × 2200 px in a 1:1 square, with 1500 × 1500 px the minimum to enable zoom.
- Format — JPEG, JPG, PNG, or BMP at 5 MB or less. GIFs aren't permitted.
- No overlays — no watermarks, seller names, logos, or promotional claims on the main image.
Google Shopping Image Requirements: The Minimums Are Rising
Google Shopping isn't a marketplace you list on so much as a feed you get judged by — and the judging criteria just changed.
- Current minimums — 100 × 100 px for general products, 250 × 250 px for apparel.
- The big change — Google has announced a 500 × 500 px minimum for all product images. Warnings have been appearing in Merchant Center since April 14, 2026, and enforcement begins January 31, 2027. If your feed still leans on tiny legacy images, the clock is running.
- Recommended — 800 × 800 px or larger for the best display across placements.
- Upper limits — 16 MB per file, 64 megapixels max.
- No promo overlays — watermarks, sale badges, and promotional text on the image itself trigger disapproval.
- Framing — Google wants the product filling roughly 75–90% of the frame.
The Common Denominator: A Clean Background
Read those four lists again and one pattern jumps out. Every platform either requires a clean background or quietly rewards one — and every platform punishes clutter, watermarks, and text.
Amazon takes this furthest of all, demanding pure white with the product filling at least 85% of the frame; we covered every rule in our Amazon product image requirements deep-dive.

That's the practical upside: you don't need four photo shoots. Shoot once, well lit, against anything. Then strip the background with remover.bg and export onto pure white — one master image that satisfies Walmart's RGB check, eBay's clean-photo policy, Etsy's clarity bar, and Google's overlay rules in a single pass. If you're maintaining a large catalog across channels, the same cleanup runs programmatically through our background-removal API.
Your Cross-Marketplace Cheat Sheet
If you remember nothing else, remember this.
- Shoot big — a 2200 × 2200 master image clears every platform's bar with room to spare.
- Make the main image pure white — required on Walmart and Amazon, rewarded everywhere else.
- Never add text, badges, or watermarks — all four platforms will hold it against you.
- Keep your originals — specs rise over time (Google just proved it), and you can't upscale your way out of a small source file.
One clean master image. Four marketplaces. Zero suppressed listings.
